Live From Moab! - DAY 5 (Photos) 05/26/2010

Crescent Junction
We found this site from a Right of Entry permit filed at the governor's office. We're pretty sure it's a viable site as they've paid to lease the land here. This is a vast, expansive flat of land which feels wildly out of place.

After seeing oppresive mountains on either side of me everywhere I went over the past four days, coming out here was quite a contrast. As far as the eye can see is rolling prairieland. I tried to take photos of the most "Barsoomian" looking areas.

Slowly rolling dunes juxtaposed against dyanamic jagged peaks in the distance. Amazing in scale and surreal to behold. I felt like I wasw the one that had been transported to Mars. Looking into the horizon, I see a herd of wild Thoats charging across the plains. Oh wait... those are just cows. :)

Yeah, I'm on Earth all right. Here and there I saw black cows roaming freely, grazing on the low tuffs of grass here and there. They could have cared less about me until I tried to take pictures of them. The minute they saw me pointing something at them, they bolted.

Yes... cows can bolt, and it looks as funny as it sounds. The pair in front of me comically lumbered off across the road as soon as I got out my camera.

Rainbow Terrace
These last two photos are near a place called Rainbow Terrace. The road to this place wins the "Most Likely to Die of Thirst Walking Back to Town If Your Car Gets Stuck" award. Extremely remote. Extremely quiet. Extremely far from everything and no cell service! Needless to say, I didn't risk things much out here with my little 2-wheel drive rental. I only got to about 15 miles of where I really wanted to go before the road started turning into the sandy landscape. That's okay though, the photo shows at least that in depth. It's pretty much the same everywhere out there.

I turned around a few miles after passing this strange windmill. I have absolutely no idea what it's used for other than possibly a pump for an old well? Maybe they were digging for uranium way out here and needed water.. who knows? I just thought it was cool in a nifty steampunk kinda way :)

I really think this location is a bust. I saw no Barsoom signs, nor did anyone in town seem to know anything about the site. This just felt like a wild goose chase. I think maybe they talked about it back when the Moab Times article came out, but then saw how remote it was and changed their mind for another location, or this isn't the spot at all. Oh well, an hour or two of my time well spent admiring the scenery.

The End
Well folks that's going to do it. I'm flying home today and this is my last report. I hope you have enjoyed the coverage as much as I've enjoyed being here. Even though I didn't get to meet any of the cast, I think this trip has still been a raging success. Moab is one of the most amazing places I've ever been to and I'd recommend it to anyone at any age.

What the?!?! Yeah, that's what I said too when I saw this... this is a Banth from Disney's 1957 space series, Mars and Beyond. Click the photo above to view the clip.

This hysterically funny video mentions Barsoom in pretty good detail at around 2:44 in the timeline. Check it out!
