![]() ![]() ![]() The Barsoom Production Office Shortly after my tasty, but suicidally cholesterol-infused breakfast, I inexplicably drove right past this sign while looking for something else. Not to look good fortune pass me by, I pulled over and paid our Disney friends a rather awkward, but good intentioned howdy. Conversation was friendly, brief, and about what you'd expect if you suddenly had a surprise visit from a guy running an unofficial fan site about your movie. If you haven't guessed, they're pretty busy folks and would prefer not having unexpected visitors. The Fisher Towers SetAnd here it is... the fruit of yesterday's labor! It's in a pretty remote location, and like many others we've shown, pretty non-descript. Click on the photo for a wider version. The set appears to be on a private parcel of land which looks like an old farm. You can't see it very clearly in the photo, but the Colorado river runs right between the trailers you can see and the mountain wall behind them. With the complete lack of other equipment (cranes, cargo boxes, etc), it looks like they are probably filming on or near the river. We've seen rafts before in Lake Powell, so maybe this is a continuation of that shoot. The Colorado river is pretty narrow, so I'm still thinking canals here rather than the River Iss, but of course I could be wrong. See the first three photos in the set below. They were taken about 2-5 miles from the site from the road and at various public launches, for an idea on what the river looks like. Impact on Moab There isn't any at all! I spoke to bazillions of people in and around the area and yet I can count on one hand how many people knew Disney was filming up here. Apparently, Moab is so used to hosting film crews and other events, that the novelty of it has worn off. Yes, the mega-film work is relatively new to the area, but they are visited every year by so many other events that it gets lost in the shuffle. Hikers, Bikers, ATVers, Offroaders, Mountain Climbers, you name it... they all have their "yearly" big events and get-togethers here. Moab is the mecca for this kind of stuff. Things change so much that a local couldn't tell you what's going on without looking at a current newspaper! Impact on Me Besides the JCOM work I did in the morning, I spent the better half of the afternoon enjoying the other sights Moab had to offer. Okay, that's putting things too mildly... let me rephrase that. Yesterday, I saw the most amazing, stunning, life-changing vistas I have ever seen... ever. And folks, I've been to the Grand Canyon and the mountains of Rio De Janeiro in Brazil--Moab has em beat. Fisher Towers has completely floored me, and that's after only one comparatively small area! Fisher Towers was gorgeous, but from what people are telling me, Canyonlands and Arches National park are even more so. I've still got to visit three other rumored site locations and I'll be hitting one a day I expect. As I can't seem to find a local story concerning the production here, I'll try to keep you amused as I wander with these regular reports. In my free time I'll be either hiking or ATV'ing through this amazing part of the country and taking lots of photographs. Here's a few I took yesterday in Fisher Towers. Enjoy! (Seriously folks, click on a few! They're breathtaking)
