![]() Look Who I Shared a Plane With!Wow, the fates were certainly kind to me early yesterday morning! Arriving at Moab's Canyonlands Airport, I went to the counter to get all my paperwork in order. A short time later, a few others arrived in the small airport lobby, and began cueing in behind me. As I took my boarding pass and turned to leave, I faced a tall, stalwart man with a native american countenance that looked chiseled out of bedrock. It was none other than Aldred Montoya, one of the actors cast to play Apaches for John Carter's Earth bound scenes. I asked if I could trouble him for a picture, to which he graciously agreed, then motioned for all the others to come and join us. I immediately recognized Joseph Billingiere, who could easily have been Aldred's brother. So much so, that I kept embarrassingly mixing them up as we waited for the flight to leave. I also met Akima, a third native american actor, and a really funny guy. Also in the group were Sean Carrigan (Calvary Sergeant) a cool, rugged dude, and Dusty Sorg (Twitchy Corporal) who was amused to find he had a small cult following on IMDB's forum. A short time later, the producer, Jim Morris walked in as well. I shook his hand and expressed my devotion to the book and support for the movie. All in all, a great group of guys. Everyone seemed to have thoroughly enjoyed their stay in Moab as much as I did. Of course, no one could really talk about the movie, but they all seemed to have really been jazzed about being able to part of it. Our little group pretty much dominated the small, 20-seat Beecher, and we chatted about all kinds of regular stuff on the ride to Denver. An Interesting LandingAfter a particularly bumpy ride, co-piloted by who the pilot described as the "youngest pilot" in the Great Lakes airline, the small aircraft bounced to a landing in Denver. The bumpy ride however wasn't caused by the youthful pilot, it was caused by what you see in the picture to the left. A small, slowly rotating tornado was forming on the Tarmac less than 300 yards from us! The supercell above us was huge and ominous, kinda looking like a gigantic, upside down, killer cinnamon bun. Unfortunately, by the time my stupid iPhone powered back up, I was only able to get the cylindrical part of the tornado as it was dissapating back up into the cloud. It really never touched the ground, or formed the typical cone, but it was definitely headed that way when we landed. So much so, that we were rushed acreoss the windy tarmac, into the airport, without even the chance to gather our stowed carry-on luggage. It was chaos in the airport. No one could tell me where to go or what to do about my carry-ons. Sirens were going off and warnings to keep away from windows were sounding. Flights were being rearranged all over the place. Somehow through it all, my flight left on time and all my bags made it back home with me, which was nothing short of a miracle. Thanks to all the airline folks that helped me on my way. In all, it was an amazing vacation, and I hope you've all enjoyed the photos. Keep watching the site for more news as it appears! |
