News from Delta/Tule Dry Lake, UT! (Photos) 05/16/2010

Wow! Disney's getting around... they've already moved up from Southern Utah and are now apparently in Delta, near or in the Tule Dry Lake area, SHOOTING MARS!

Most importantly, it looks like this is where they will be filming the scene where John Carter arrives on Mars, then meets Tars Tarkas!!!

Here's what an intrepid fossil-hunter in the area has sent us:

I'm new to the site. I came here after stumbling upon a Utah shooting location yesterday in a very remote place west of Delta.

We were headed out for a fossil-hunting trip from Delta. A large number of Buena Vista trucks and trailers passed through town, headed west on US Highway 6/50. We followed them 60 miles or so into the desert, joking they must be using the salt flat hardpan we were headed to as a location. Imagine our complete surprise when they all turned off onto the hardpan! All along the route we saw signs, titled, "Barzoom".

There was already a large number of vehicles, cranes, lighting and such on site. It looks like a set was constructed on the side of a rocky "island" in the middle of the hardpan. The largest number of vehicles was concentratad next to the island. Another site, with a sign stating , "New Environs" was further south.

We talked to a site security representative who told us about the movie. He indicated the stars might be arriving by helicopter, but that hadn't been worked out yet. He said they would be there until the end of next week.

The photos were taken May 15, 2010 of the location near Delta, Utah. We were never much closer than about 1/2 mile from the site. For your interest, the site name locally is the "Tule Valley Hardpan".

The first two photo is approaching the location from the Northwest. The third and fourth photos were taken east of the main site, looking west. Lots of production equipment located here. Cranes, lights, commisary trucks, etc. right on the salt flat

The fifth photo is of a very noticable set, located on the side of the rocky "island" in the middle of the salt flat. The set was a sort of low, stone building that matched the natural rock around it very well.

The sixth photo is of the New Environs site, about a mile south of the other site. A sign stated this is the New Environs set. We could see some sort of orange colored bunch of bushes or reeds that have been placed on the salt flat. In the distance, near an existing pond, were a couple of dark containers that are new to the area and probably associated with the production.

Had we realized it, we could have taken photos of another, larger set which was constructed on the west side of the island. I noticed a road and a building over there, which have never been there before. It didn't occur to me until today what those were. Also, we didn't realize until later that a set was located here. There is a road of some sort leading uphill and a building very low, almost on the flat. Those features aren't normally there, so we decided later it was associated with the production. I also heard this morning another site may be used southwest of these, on the other side of the mountain range. It is a very rocky labyrinth in that location.

We talked to someone out there, who indicated these are the initial Mars sites. Apparently Willem Dafoe's character [Tars Tarkas] will stride across the flat towards Carter.

On a semi-interesting side note, the third photo shows a semi tralier with the logo for "Location Fitness" on it's side. Location Fitness provides fully equipped, mobile gyms to remote locations to keep the stars in shape. Hey, nobody wants to see JC getting flabby abs halfway through the movie!
