![]() Actor Taylor Kitsch is on a career high of astronomical proportions! In Disney's sci-fi fantasy epic "John Carter of Mars," he plays John Carter, a civil war veteran who is transported to Mars where he battles fantastic creatures and wins the hand of their beautiful Martian princess. Best known for his role as Tim Riggins on NBC's Emmy-nominated television series "Friday Night Lights (2006)," you'll also remember Taylor as Gambit in "X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009)." More recently, you can find him portraying another Carter (Kevin) in the upcoming film "The Bang Bang Club (2010)." Next up, Taylor will play Alex Hopper in "Battleship," a film based off of the popular board game. We recently had an opportunity for an online interview with the popular actor, asking him about John Carter of Mars and his experiences working on the movie. He has a very busy shooting schedule, and we appreciate the time he took to reply to our questions and connect with his fans! Originally published in 1912 by Edgar Rice Burroughs, the Barsoom book(s) the film is based on aren't on most people's radar. Did you know about the story when you were offered the role? What attracted you to the part? I only knew of or informed myself about it when I heard there was interest in me playing or reading for John Carter. Then of course you take as much as you can with the scenes given for the read. I love being under the radar. What attracted me was Stanton and his vision and of course a story that has never been told, plus to be in a character driven adventure. Since then, have you researched the books, and was it helpful in understanding and portraying the character? Yeah, I defintitely have gone through books but did put them down when starting work with the script which has more depth in regards to John Carter’s background. John Carter has some pretty big shoes to fill. How did you feel going into the role of a "superman?" No one will put more pressure on this than me. He ain't superman. [ Editor’s Note: Yeah, Ok… Superman was a bit over the top to compare by. Even though the books influenced the Superman character, I doubt we’ll see JC having x-ray vision or flying faster than a speeding bullet. ] There must be alot of running around with your shirt off. Did you have to buff up much for the film? Ate nothing but fast food, Chinese and pizza in prepping ;) Because of the lower gravity on Mars, John Carter could leap over 40 feet. There must be alot of wire work involved. Do you do any of the stunt work yourself? I definitely do as much as I possibly am able to do. A lot of who John Carter is comes out in his fights, so of course I do as much as possible. The action in this is very intense and I love that. I'm assuming it's been a pretty grueling schedule, how do you relax and unplug? Have you been able to get out and enjoy any of the gorgeous locations you have filmed in? I have tried, but the best thing for me has been to simply conserve as much as I can. With 6 day weeks and working every single one of them, I need to preserve as much as possible. Also in Wolverine, you worked with Lynn Collins. How has it been working with her as your leading lady? She has been nothing but a pleasure from the screen test on to work and collaborate with. How has it been working with Andrew Stanton, this being his first foray in directing live action? His attitude and passion is infectious, and we get along seamlessly. It's been an incredible journey, and I'm proud to have shared it with him. What can you tell us about your costume and the props? Are they as described in the books? The costume/props are as close to or better than the books. So, next up for you is the lead in Battleship, right? You seem to attract these action roles. Have you always seen yourself playing these type of parts? I like to think I can dive into all sorts of roles from Kevin Carter (The Bang Bang Club), to Riggs (Friday Night Lights), to John Carter. I have a feeling the next gig post Battleship will be very character driven as well. What has been your favorite part of working on this movie? This has tested me on every level on and off screen, and I wouldn't trade this experience for anything. Grown a lot. It is something to be proud of. No Regrets, John Carter |
