![]() Thanks to www.barsoomia.org who found this wonder nugget first! We're about 75% sure that these are actually Banth bones this fellow was commissioned to make, as there aren't any "Saber Tooth Tigers" on Mars that we know of. Our best guess is that he was actually making the bones of the critter pictured in the topmost illustration. In case you were wondering, that's a famous Michael Whelan rendition (one of my favorite ERB painters) of Thuvia, maid of Mars, with one of her charmed "pets." The Banth is a Barsoomian "lion". It hunts the hills surrounding the dead seas of Barsoom. It has a long, sleek body, with ten legs, large jaws equipped with several rows of sharp fangs in a mouth which extends back almost to small ears. It is mostly hairless, except for a thick mane around the neck. It has large, protruding green eyes... The remaining 25% chance is there because there has been talk of an archeological dig somewhere, and we're not entirely sure if it was a dig on Earth or Mars. If on Earth, then these bones might indeed be prehistoric Saber Tooth Tiger bones... who knows :) Here's a clip from their article which also hosted these pics: -- snip -- John Carter of Mars is a movie set for release in 2012. Orlandi was contacted to make the bones for a fight scene where saber tooth tiger [ more likely, Banth ] bones are spread across a desert. We received the models from the film company, then molded the skulls, casting a few hundred in total. We think it is being filmed in part of a Utah desert. Keep a look out in 2012 for our bones. We can't wait to check it out. -- end snip -- |
