FEATURED SITE OF THE WEEK

www.barsoomia.org

Our good friend Jeff Doten (Illustrator extraordinaire and JCOM fanatic) has built himself a rather nice movie fansite I'm sure all will enjoy. So, during the times when I'm a few days (or weeks) behind the news curve, I'm sure Jeffo will be taking up the slack as he routinely scoops me on news :) GREAT JOB JEFF!

NOT NEWS, BUT INTERESTING STUFF

MARCH 18, 2008:  Does Disney want this Domain Name?
webmaster, Mike Carambat

When Disney/Pixar picked up the film, I (Mike Carambat, owner of www.johncartermovie.com) sent a letter to some of the principles in the film, introducing myself and my website, and offered to help in anyway possible. Since then, I have sent a few more emails over the past few months. The mouse hasn't so much as squeaked in my general direction :)

That's okay. I completely understand the sensitivity involved in corresponding with folks like me who run these kinds of rumor mill websites. SO... just in case my emails aren't getting through, and in lieu of the current news that Disney is registering JC domains left and right, I am using this venue to reconfirm the availability of this domain name to those involved in producing this film.

It's a great domain name, with an average of 3600 hits a month. We are in the top 5 in most JC related google searches. We are the go-to domain for all things concerning the JC Movie!

A few years ago, I made an offer on this domain to Paramount who took me up on it. I extend the same offer to Disney/Pixar. The offer is as follows: This domain is available EXCLUSIVELY to Disney/Pixar for whatever fee THEY determine fair and for a few movie goodies for me and my editors (animatics, preproduction artwork, etc) in appreciation for the work we do. The only stipulation is that I be able to maintain this site until the domain is actually needed for the film. I owe it to my readers to keep the site up as long as possible. If no one at Disney wants this domain name AFTER the movie is made, I may entertain offers from other parties, if I decide to not continue this site. If anyone at Disney.Pixar finds this interesting, please email me at info@johncartermovie.com

I've never been in this for the money. This site's main focus has always been to promote the movie and get this dream realized. From the way things are going, we are closer than ever to seeing this story on  the big screen and I'm very excited!

JUNE 8, 2006:  Note from the Editor                                                                                          Someone may have spotted another name or initials on a couple of the posts lately.  Since the first of June, I have taken on the job as news editor on this website for some period of time, while Mike Carambat takes a little break and is attending to his other projects.  I feel like I have big shoes to fill, but I am taking baby steps, and will appreciate your understanding while I learn the ropes.    Diana Lea Cole

JANUARY 3, 2006: The Hollywood Stock Exchange (HSX)
Okay, this is really cool! The HSX is a virtual stock exchange using virtual currency to buy and sell based on the popularity of movies and stars. It's just a game, but it plays very real. They have a huge list of upcoming movies in pre-productions (JCOM included) and rising stars which you can buy "shares" in. Then, if as the movie or star becomes more popular, your virtual money increases! They start your account off with about 2 mil for free and you can buy whatever your want.

Also, the information in HSX is sometimes used by other REAL companies as a real-life predictor for movie success. People use it when making film purchasing decisions, or WHETHER OR NOT TO GO AHEAD WITH A FILM... nudge, nudge! Right now, JCOM is selling for around H$2.60 a share, then when it skyrockets in Spring (heh heh, see Movie News), you'll make a killing!

Click on the graph at left to check it's current stock price or go to http://www.hsx.com to play.

JULY 1, 2005: The Towers of Mars, By Kurt Metz, animator
Kurt Metz is a neat illustrator and designer. For his graduation (BA Computer Arts) demo reel, Kurt created this 90 second animated short. Inspired by ERB's John Carter of Mars series, a dashing hero is on a quest to liberate his beloved Princess from a prison chamber located at the top of an immense tower deep in the heart of an enemy city.

Kurt has been working as a professional cartoonist and illustrator for over 20 years, but would like to advance on to something a little larger. His hope is to work in feature films or television as a pre-production designer, character designer or animator.

JUNE 17, 2005: Bill Stout Interview in Winter 2003 edition of The Comics Journal
On the Movie News page it's posted that some of the conceptual artists had been selected and that Bill Stout dropped out, unable to work out a deal. Well, he had apparently been contacted before to do the movie back in 1990 by Hollywood Pictures (a subsidiary arm of Disney) and then later by Cinergi. This is a very illuminating interview with Bill Stout concerning the movie's numerous failed attempts to be made. Please keep in mind, this was written over two years ago BEFORE the current Paramount production and in NO WAY reflects upon the current crew and movie direction.

JUNE 10, 2005: Correspondence with Harry Knowles, Producer
The following is a letter I received from Harry Knowles, one of the producers for JCOM. I found it to be very warm and encouraging! Not to mention a somewhat direct repudiation of the rumor concerning Krueger leaving... I guess time will tell :)

I look forward to following your site's coverage of JOHN CARTER OF MARS with great interest. Yes, I am one of the producers on the film along with Jim Jacks and Sean Daniel. Just as IMDB.com confirms. Kerry Conran is the director, and the work he has been doing has been absolutely breathtaking. There has been a great deal of design work, computer tests, filmed tests and so many other tests that have been being done to just get a hand hold on how to make this mammoth undertaking the film we all dream it can be. Currently Ehren Krueger is working with Kerry on the script. This is all going to be a very long and hard journey to bring this great work of Burroughs to life on screen, but the support from Paramount Pictures and the talent aboard... well, let's just say I have the utmost confidence that the work we're doing is going to amaze the world of Barsoom lovers everywhere.

We're getting closer to launching our own official website, so keep your eyes and ears open.

Welcome to the John Carter of Mars Unoffical Fansite
This site is designed to help promote interest in the upcoming film, JOHN CARTER OF MARS, based on the book "A Princess of Mars" by Edgar Rice Burroughs. Not much information has been made public yet about the movie, but this site will attempt to gather as much as possible. Enjoy!

Quick History
Aiming his work at the pulp magazines then in circulation, ERB's first story "Under the Moons of Mars" was serialized in All-Story magazine in 1912. It was later published under the name "A Princess of Mars" and has long since become a sci-fi classic.

What's the Story?
Virginian Civil War era fighter Captain John Carter is mysteriously tranported to Mars; a living Mars with breathable air, dead sea bottoms covered with ocher vegetation, and intelligent life. Arriving naked and unarmed, he falls in with the horde of Thark, fierce thoat riding nomads who make a life in the wastes of the dead sea bottoms of dying Mars. In a short time Carter learns the language of the Tharks and his fighting abilities win him an honored place among them.

Carter's life changes when a Martian princess, the incomparable Dejah Thoris, falls captive to the savage Tharks. Chivalrous to the core, John Carter offers his sword in Dejah Thoris's defense. Soon he is in love, and with naught but a pair of mounts and his Martian longsword, he escapes with Dejah Thoris into the trackless red Martian deserts with enraged Tharks in hot pursuit. Many adventures still await John Carter before he and Dejah Thoris are finally wed. -- Contributor, David Starr

Why make the Movie?
David Starr, a fan, writes, "What is the unique charm of a 100-year-old men's magazine adventure yarn? How does this simple pulp magazine story create loyal lifetime fans? What strengths of this somewhat corny yarn can a movie capitalize upon? If the movie can tap into the same strengths that made Burroughs a best seller for 90 years, it can have a long and profitable run. And lead to profitable sequels. Burroughs had a magic touch. He aimed his books toward what is called today "young adult", but his tales were always memorable..." click here to read the full article

Why make this website?
This website has been produced independently by myself and has contributions from the loyal ERB fan base. It is in no way associated with Paramount. I have been designing and programming websites for over 10 years and am the owner of a website design and hosting company, Design Wizardry. This site is a labour of love, as I am a huge fan of ERB and 1930-1950's sci-fi.
